WE MADE IT!!

We arrived the Alaska border on June 28th and were excited to have reached our goal. The first two or three hours were wilderness so turning our phones back produced a no signal.   We our now 4 hours behind our eastern time and still trying to get used to the daylight pouring into our windows at midnight.   We saw one moose along our route to Fair banks.   We are camped in Fairbanks near North Pole, Alaska.  We mailed a few cards from the North Pole post office.  Neat little town a few miles from Fairbanks!  We  will stay in Fairbanks for a few days and catch up with a friend, Patty  from our church in GA.    Her husband is stationed here and is in the Army band.  We hope to hear him play tomorrow and attend a salmon bake.

Pictures below are of the Alaska Pipe line, glacier ice, the border of Alaska.

Raining in Fairbanks.

pictures KLUANE LAKE, YUKON, CANADA

The internet is not very fast in some of our camp grounds, so it is impossible to post every day.   We left Whitehorse, Yukon on June 26th.  Boyd had been researching the road conditions on the rv forum.   We had planned to travel up to Dawson City and cross the border there but the forum reported that the roads were almost unpassable in some areas.  Rv's had flipped and other wrecks reported.  We decided to go towards and  on to Beaver Creek and up through Tok.   The next 200 miles were also terrible road conditions.  We had to travel 20 to 30 miles an hour and completely stop and go around the potholes and into the other lane.   The road freezes in the winter, and thawing in the spring causes the road to break apart.   It was quite an experience and stressful for my persevering husband.   We heard of several wrecks on the way.  Guess the drivers were moving to fast.  The pictures below were some of the most beautiful scenery that we crossed,  of course every mountain to us looks more beautiful than the previous.   The Kluane Lake was amazing....... 154 sq miles of beautiful water surrounded by mountains and these amazing flowers that are called   Bear-root or maybe wild sweet pea, an important food source for the Grizzly Bear.  The sweet pea and bear root are similar and many people get them mixed up.  The sweet pea is poisonous and have killed humans.

On to Alaska!!!

ALASKA HIGHWAY, YUKON

We arrived Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway yesterday morning in Dawson, Creek...British Columbia, Canada.    We stayed the night at Fort St John.  In the 18th Century Sir Alexander Mackenzie opened a series of forts along the Peace River to service the Fur Traders.  We drove on through the day and spend last night at Fort Nelson.  There were cotton trees  and pieces of cotton lying everywhere.  I had never seen that kind of tree before.    We stopped at a place called Testa River that is a favorite stopping place along the route, operated by the original family.  It is popular for its homemade cinnamon buns.   They were great.   We saw three bears yesterday which was neat.  We had been waiting to see a bear.  They were all black so hopefully we will see grizzly next.     In the pictures below you will see Rancheria Falls.  It was about a 20 minute hike from the road.  We are staying tonight in Whitehorse Yukon.  75 degrees here today and they think it is hot.    In the 90's in Atlanta, I am sure.     Alaska is getting closer every day.

ON WITH THE JOURNEY!!!

WILDLIFE IN THE ROCKIES

I have posted two times today so scroll down and see the pictures.   Today was our day to see wildlife.  We were traveling the scenic route from Jasper, Alberta up to Grand Prarie, Alberta Canada.   The Elk were right near the town of Jasper but over the day we saw Big Horn sheep, Moose,  deer, a fox carrying a squirrel (we did not get a picture) and a Mountain Goat (no picture).  Sometimes they are moving to fast for us to snap the photo.  The scenery through the rockies as been wonderful.  We are camping tonight in Grand Prarie.   It is 11:00 at night and still not dark.   This is so strange to me.  I could not go to sleep last night until around 2:00.  I miss talking to my kids and family.  When we get to Alaska we will turn our phones back on.  Better get to bed and see if I can sleep.  :)

LAKE LOUISE, CANADIAN ROCKIES....WHAT BEAUTY!!!

LAKE LOUISE, CANADIAN ROCKIES....WHAT BEAUTY!!!

Tues. - June 22, 2011
We left Okotoks, Canada around noon after stopping at Wal-Mar,t stocking up and getting on Internet at McDonalds.  We headed to Calgary for the Pudding Yarn Shop.  It was right in the middle of downtown Calgary.  Boyd was stressed driving in the traffic.  What a great shop with neat yarn.  I tried to rush since Boyd was in our vehicle with the motor running.   It was good to head up the mountain toward the beautiful Canadian Rockies.  We were once again in awe of the handiwork of our creator.  w
We entered the town of Banff, which is 4540 ft above sea level.  It is Canada's highest town.  We then went on to Banff National Park and a dream come true was to go to the famous and breath taking Lake Louise.   Mountain Guide Tom Wilson, discovered what Natives called "Lake of Little Fishes" in 1882.  Later he named this mountain and glacier-framed beauty Lake Louise, after Queen Victoria's daugher.   It was as beautiful as people had described.  There was an enormous Chateau over looking the lake.  Only the wealthy can stay there.
We left Lake Louise and drove into Jasper National Park.  We went for many miles hoping to see wild life along the way.  Every mountain was spectacular.  The only wild life we saw was a mouse and a buzzard and finally a bull horn mountain goat and baby crossed in front of us.  We drove for many miles over steep terrain  looking for a camp ground.  Getting closer to the town of Jasper we saw several Elk and a camp ground with water and electric.   It was 10:30 PM and we were bone tired.  It gets dark around 11:30 in this part of Canada.  Hard to get used to.
ON TO ANOTHER ADVENTURE!!!
